Crosshairs is the sixteenth novel in the Michael Bennett series featuring the NYPD detective in a high-stakes hunt for an elusive assassin. However, Trilling’s profile as a military-trained shooter and his frequent unexplained absences from duty lead Bennett to a disturbing suspicion: his new partner might actually be the assassin he is hunting.
The investigation eventually reveals that the sniper is targeting individuals with criminal backgrounds, exploring themes of vigilante justice and morality.
A central tension in the book is Bennett’s struggle to reconcile Trilling’s impressive military record with the circumstantial evidence that casts him as a suspect.
